Hike - HITHER WOODS NEW YEAR’S HIKE
Distance: ~6 miles
Level: moderate, some hills
Take a tour of Montauk’s largest park on a hike through Hither Hills and Hither Woods State Parks and Suffolk County’s Lee Koppelman Preserve. We’ll enjoy the forest and the Block Island Sound coast, and we’ll pass a couple of large glacial erratics. Meet 10:00 a.m. at Hither Hills Overlook (West Overlook), north side of Route 27, Montauk. Walk - Northwest Harbor, East Hampton
Distance: 1.5 miles
Level: easy
Northwest Harbor was the main port of East Hampton from 1654 until the first wharf was built in Sag Harbor in 1761. Join us for a short walk around the beach of the harbor and learn about its colorful past as we enjoy views of Shelter Island, Cedar Point Park and Barcelona Neck. Hike - Montauk County Park
Distance: 3 miles
Level: moderate
The trails include hiking adjacent to Big Reed Pond, a Native-American field with its foundations, and gorgeous scenery, a diversity of landscapes! The hike covers areas not included on the 10/26 hike. Please note that this three-mile hike does have uneven terrain with rocks and roots. Meet at the parking area (take the dirt entrance by the Montauk County Park Big Reed Nature Trails sign) off East Lake Drive, approximately 2 miles north from the intersection off Rt. 27. Hike -Napeague State Park Ghost Forest Hike
Distance: 1.6 miles
Level: moderate
Short but unusual hike through the dead pitch pine forest of Napeague State Park, south of Montauk Highway. This loop hike will take you through the strangle - but strangely beautiful - pitch pine woods between Montauk Highway and the Atlantic Ocean. Nearly all the pitch pines have been killed by the Southern pine beetle and grassland is now taking over this area. Hike - North Neck Trail & Culloden Point
Distance: 4 -5 miles
Level: moderate
Dual hike, going southbound and back on the North Neck Trail (opened in 2022), before tramping into the beautiful Culloden Point Preserve. We will visit the eastern shore of Fort Pond Bay on our travels. Meet 10:00 a.m. at the Culloden Point historic marker, west side of Flamingo Avenue, about 400 feet north of Wills Point Road. Hike - Miller’s Ground, East Hampton
Distance: 5 miles
Level: moderate
We will hike to Miller's Ground at the western edge of East Hampton, north of the airport. There will be abundant mountain laurel and varied knob-and-kettle topography along with a short, educational side trip to the town line. From Wainscott-Northwest Road, we will walk northwest on an unmarked trail parallel to the power line, cross over the utility right-of-way, and return southeast on a segment of the East Hampton-Sag Harbor Trail. Meet at 10 AM where the power line crosses Wainscott-Northwest Road/Daniels Hole Road, just north of the airport. Bring water and dress for the weather. Explore the eastern part of Hither Woods, including Laurel Canyon, Panorama, and Riah’s Ridge, before swinging back to the coast at Fort Pond Bay. The leader will fill you in on the history of this part of Montauk and what it took to save Hither Woods from development. This hilly, approximately 3.5 miles relaxed-pace hike takes us through the woods of Hither Hills State Park, celebrating its 100th anniversary. It features Napeague Bay and Fresh Pond views. Ramble - North Amagansett
Distance: 4 miles
Level: moderate
Exploring the Trails of Stony Hill and Abraham’s Path, north of Town Lane, Amagansett. In collaboration with the Peconic Land Trust (PLT), please join us for a 4-mile ramble through fields and woods and learn some of the history of north Amagansett. The fields and farms of the Trust’s Deborah Ann Light Preserve offer a delightful backdrop to this morning hike, which will take you through parts of the Trust’s Stony Hill Preserve featuring rolling hills and beautiful mature woods. The hike, led by Rick Whalen, is moderately paced and offers some hills. Meet 10 AM on the road shoulder of Abraham’s Path, about 1/4 mile north of Town Lane. Walk - Jacob’s Farm To Pussy’s Pond

Enjoy an autumn walk to water, starting in the woods of the Jacob’s Farm Preserve in The Springs, East Hampton. We will amble to the Pussy’s Pond bridge at the edge of the Accabonac Creek tidewater and return. Hike - Big Reed Harvest

Enjoy the lush trails around the Big Reed Pond in their fall colors: ripe grapes, apples, and hickory nuts may be found along the way. Meet at the Nature Trails site off East Lake Drive, about 2 miles north of the intersection with Route 27 in Montauk. We will walk about 3 miles from Old Beach Lane past the Maidstone Club to Middle Lane, Cross Highway and Hither Lane to one of my favorite areas of East Hampton: The Village Nature Trail and Duck Pond! Hike - Montauk Point & Camp Hero State Park

The long hike will head west on the Money Pond Trail north of Route 27, then turn south, cross the highway, and pick up the Paumanok Path. The Paumanok follows the Point Woods Trail before turning east near the ocean and finishing at Montauk Point. Meet 10 AM at the Montauk Point parking lot (parking fee required).
