Short but unusual hike through the dead pitch pine forest of Napeague State Park, south of Montauk Highway. This loop hike will take you through the strangle - but strangely beautiful - pitch pine woods between Montauk Highway and the Atlantic Ocean. Nearly all the pitch pines have been killed by the Southern pine beetle and grassland is now taking over this area. Meet 10:00 a.m. at the Napeague State Park trailhead parking area on the south side of Montauk Highway (Route 27). 3/4 mile east of Shipwreck Drive. Info only, call Rick: (631) 275-8539.
